Drive systems for the mining industry

HAFE's drive solutions are based on the principle of the function pyramid: motors, drives and gears are just as much components as the extensive range of system modules, such as planning, project management, installation and service. HAFE produces helical, parallel shaft, bevel gear and worm gear units.

Mine hoist drive systems

HAFE hoist drive systems are used in underground mines worldwide. HAFE provides complete hoist systems, including HAFE AC or DC drives, motors, encoders, transformers, power conditioning, operator stations, electronic over-speed, installation and commissioning.

Mining frequency converters

HAFE also provides fire-damp protected, low-voltage mining frequency converters for speed-controlled drive engineering, for operations in armoured-face conveyors, belt conveyors and coilers.

This equipment can also be used as current source converters for 4Q-operation (drive and brake in both rotating directions) or PWM-inverters for 2Q-operation (drive in both rotating directions). The converters are executed as a compact station for de-central erection.

Converters come with a rated shaft power of between 250kW and 500kW, BdD type for 4Q operation; or between 90kW and 630kW, VSD type for 2Q operation, and have a nominal voltage of 3AC1kV or maximal 1,14kV.

HAFE converters include intrinsically safe PROFIBUS-DP-AM (ATEX mining) and FSK-modulation data transmission, and frequency or speed regulation and torque control, with or without speed feedback.

Electric motors for mining applications

Our capability to manufacture specialty electric motors is excellent. Custom motors for mining and other specialty applications are designed and manufactured in our facility, along with a multitude of motor components to support the repair side of the business.

Repairs provided by each service center are based on our proprietary insulation systems, engineered upgrades based on 'real world' experience, and ISO9001-certified processes. These combined services result in increased reliability and reduced cost of ownership for our customers.

Excavator motors and generators

HAFE has some regular excavator motors and generators in-stock and available for customer exchange. All units are completely refurbished to HAFE's specifications to ensure reliability and long service life. Motor exchange options include components stored at one of HAFE's service centers, as well as Flanders-owned spares stored at customers' mine sites.

Our capabilities for the mining industry range from single drives on drill applications to complete electrical drive systems, with turnkey installation and start-up on shovels and draglines. HAFE specializes in upgrading older drive systems to eliminate obsolete hardware and provide mines with 'better than new' control systems.

Power grip clutches for heavy-duty power transmission

The power grip clutch can accommodate in-line mounting for use in heavy-duty power transmission. When used in conjunction with either a quick change or standard driving adapter, the power grip clutch can be used as a coupling clutch for shaft-to-shaft applications.

Split friction discs and air tubes are also available to help with maintenance. Power grip high-speed clutches are designed to withstand heavy use when mounted to internal combustion engines. The drive rings will fit standard SAE industrial flywheels. Heavy-duty laminated gear teeth friction discs are designed to withstand heavy shock loads and torsional vibrations.

HAFE has incorporated a major design improvement into the power grip clutch. The wave spring is designed to replace coil springs in new and existing clutches. Only one wave spring per plate is required versus several coil springs. The wave spring allows simple assembly of a clutch on the shaft without the use of special tools used to retain the obsolete coil springs. When the wave spring coil is used with the extended teeth hubs, the maintenance time is dramatically reduced.

HAFE's patented extended tooth hub for power grip clutches greatly assists in re-assembly of the clutch while mounted on a shaft. The extended teeth allow for all centre / floating plates to remain engaged on the hub teeth with the release springs in a relaxed state. Previous designs required special clamps to retain all parts on the hub until the air tube holding plate and the bolts could be installed.

High torque clutches and spring set brakes

HAFE has designed a range of high torque clutches and spring set brakes. These range in size from around 4in through to 60in diameter. This equipment is designed for metal forming equipment, stamping equipment and general power transmission applications.

Mechanical power take-off clutches

HAFE's mechanical power take-off (PTO) clutches are suitable for inline and side load applications on all internal combustion engines with standard SAE flywheel housing dimensions. All PTOs and parts are 100% interchangeable with existing PTOs. All units are supplied with sealed ball pilot bearings to eliminate lubrication problems normally encountered. Ball bearing throw-out collars are optional on 14in units and standard on 311 units.
